"One of the worst" is what Jacksonville Fire Rescue Chief Keith Powers said of a massive fire that destroyed an apartment structure under construction.
While there were no injuries, he said the fire at the Rise Doro was still one of the largest he's seen in the past decade. It was discovered Sunday night and crews remained at the scene Monday.
The sprinkler system didn't activate in the building that was supposed to open within weeks, First Coast News reported.
The Florida Fire Marshal's office is investigating that as well as the cause of the fire believed to have started on the sixth floor. It quickly spread in void spaces, Powers told reporters.
"This fire went to a third alarm, which means we have about 110 firefighters on scene, and that consists of about 12 engines, seven ladders, six rescues and a multitude of support apparatus. I think we're gonna get days into this just because of all the void spaces that are up there. And because it's not safe for us to put personnel inside, that means we have to work on it from the outside."
There was a collapse inside the building and there is still fear of additional issues.
